Have you ever wondered how some of the most highly complex effects in CGI are made? Most of these effects go out of the reach of almost every out of the box 3D package in the market, so how are these effects achieved? That is a very good question that may arise in one's mind.

The fact is that the 3D packages do not have the specific tool set to perform such activities and that is where the need to extend them becomes apparent, thankfully today’s software market is rich in applications with powerful toolsets to provide just the result one is looking for, these applications are bought separately and work either in sync or through import and export in conjunction to you primary application.
Unlike a plug-in which integrates its self into the application’s interface these applications have a interface of their own, some of the most popular one used in today’s production industry are, Vue from e-on a French software company, there is RealFlow from NextLimit and Zbrush from Pixologic.
- Vue 7 is an extremely powerful environment creation software capable of handling renders weighing Billions of polygons.
- RealFlow is an advance particle and dynamics simulation package.
- Zbrush is a 2.5D sculpting and texturing software , capable of managing tens of millions of polygons.
This massive suite of extension software is often more fun to play with when someone is first starting out, I would say ZBrush is by far my number one favorite, due to the edge of interactivity it provides in a semi 3D enjoinment, it's just an awesome experience working with it.
