Some common questions that arise in the minds of almost every beginner looking to make a career in production:
Where should I start? What application to use? And most importantly, what application is the best?
Now as anyone who has experience in the fields of software and design would say, "There is no one answer to these questions" but what I will help you guys do is to zero in on what suits you guys the best by analyzing your requirements one by one.
First and foremost I would like to clarify for you people what I mean by "Production", in the film and entertainment industry a production means the compilation of all the digital content and CGI (computer generated imagery) into a final product, what that product will be is totally up to you, that is if you are working on your own, otherwise such decisions are made by the director of the production studio but as long as that is not the case your are the director , the producer , you have full control over what you want to create and how you want to create.
Coming to the question of "where to start?” Now to answer this you have to ask yourself a few quick questions, what section of the production pipeline are you aiming to make your career in, here are a few steps of the pipeline:
· 3D Modeling
· 3D Animation
· 2D Animation
· Compositing
· Visual effects
· Video editing
· Rendering
This is a very rough sketch of the processes included in production but seeing this you can slim down the production process into 2 parts 3D and 2D , there are many more fields and sub fields that one can specialize in but for now this should get you going, I for one started out as a 3D Modeler and then over time I came across different programs, now if you are into the video editing and compositing side you will not have to deal with 3D at least not as much because in such a case all the video is shot from a real camera or is coming from the guys working in the 3D department , in any case the video is imported into software for refining, that is where you come in as a video editor, compositor or visual effects artist your job will be to add all the sauce and spices to the video, fix any issues and then render the final production.

As for a person in the 3D side of production, his job is to model, texture, animate and render and send the raw rendered production to the compositors and video editors, depending on which sub field of 3D you wish to specialize in your jobs may be more or less.
Coming to what application to use and which is better, this again varies from person to person, I personally prefer Autodesk and Adobe software for my work but there is so much out there in the market that a starter might find himself totally lost. For 3D we have countless software, 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema4D, LightWave, Hexagon, Modo, Blender, for 2D image and video editing and creation we have, Photoshop, Corel Draw, After Effects, Premiere, Sony Vegas, Combustion, Fusion , Digital Fusion and the list just goes on and on.
Most people might say that Maya is better than 3ds Max, or After Effects is better than Digital Fusion and some might even say that if you want to go into the gaming industry you should chose 3dsmax and if you want to go in the Film industry you should chose Maya but let me tell you guys something even though 3ds Max is the most popular when it comes to gaming, at the end of the day you will find that both Maya and 3ds Max can achieve the same results in about the same time, this applies to all the other programs I have mentioned as well as the video editing software, it all goes down to what interface and layout suits you best, in some cases you might have to learn a software due to the requirements of the studio you are working in but once you have a solid hold on one software of its kind then the rest comes by its self, you will just have to familiarize yourself with the new buttons and procedures but it will not take you long to figure out everything because you will be aware how these things actually work under the hood.
Content creation and production is an art in its self, very engaging, very interesting , and very rewarding, just the feeling of all your effort coming to life at render time is enough to keep you going on your path towards superiority in the field.
